Happy New Year! Some thoughts for 2024

Happy New Year art

2024 is THE year to be intentional about who we are and what we are doing. Since 2021, I have been guided by my vision words which are mounted proudly on my wall: GRACE, OPPORTUNITY, CONSISTENCY.

What does GRACE mean to you? For me, think messy hair, not-so-perfect days, and being kind to yourself when life throws you lemons; embracing the opportunity to reflect and re-strategise. OPPORTUNITY is about believing in yourself enough to take necessary risks, realising that a challenge might just be an opportunity waiting to be explored. CONSISTENCY is about nailing helpful habits. Having a routine. Setting clear goals. Effective time management. Eliminating distractions. Being self-aware enough to reflect regularly and learn from mistakes. Here’s the ‘tea’ on the lessons I learned while trying to ‘live purposefully’ in 2023 and why I have brought these vision words into 2024 with me. Sip slowly…

Mental health is wealth. Don’t take it for granted. Cherish the body that you are in but protect your mind too. Beware of excesses. Be guarded and avoid stress. Be careful who you let into your circle and preserve your peace. Stay hydrated and mind your business! Unless there is a safety issue or a threat to life, choose self-preservation. Drama? Let it pass. You don’t have to respond to every dog that barks!

Sweat the small stuff. It’s all in the details! The small stuff matters. I used to feel guilty when accused of this until I realised that be it writing, editing, creating engaging campaigns, directing a design or project, cooking, cleaning, or decorating, I only produce my best when I ‘sweat the small stuff.’ Pay attention to the tiny little things because they add up to big wins. Attention to detail is a key to success and it must be applied consistently. I constantly remind myself that the quality of anything I do is a reflection of my dedication and commitment.

Work on yourself. Don’t spend so much time judging and criticising others that you forget to look in the mirror and work on yourself. Mind your own business. Self-improvement starts with self-awareness. We all have so much work to do – embrace the journey of personal growth. Surround yourself with people who can elevate your thoughts and your spirit. Know when to talk and when to listen. Do not compare yourself to anyone! Stay in your own lane and master it. Comparison they say is the thief of joy so trust yourself and give yourself grace.

Trust your instincts. A huge part of trusting yourself is trusting your instincts. Never overstay your welcome and be mindful of when it’s time to check out. Endings can be the beginning of great new things. Your feelings are valid. You are not being dramatic. You are not overreacting. Also stop apologising for your convictions. Stand firm, speak your truth, and embrace the strength that comes with your authenticity.

Leave room for error. Manage your expectations and leave room for error. Give people grace when they mess up. You have no idea what they may be going through. Understanding and forgiveness create space for growth. Give yourself grace too. You deserve your kindness. As long as you’re doing your best, you are enough. Embrace self-compassion and celebrate the journey, not just the destination.

If you found this helpful, hopefully you are inspired to think of your own vision words for 2024?

How my daughter is teaching me to be my authentic self

Moving my daughter to a new school in Year 5 was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, despite the challenges and doubts from others. Ava faced bullying for being herself and refusing to conform. Her new environment embraced her, rekindled her love for learning and boosted her confidence. The experience is a reminder that sometimes, we just need to find our people.
